Cape Verde, officially known as the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island nation situated off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Comprising ten volcanic islands, Cape Verde was uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered and colonized it in the mid-15th century, making it one of the earliest outposts of European colonial rule in Africa. Its strategic location enabled it to become a significant center for the transatlantic slave trade, which contributed to its diverse cultural heritage but also to centuries of hardship. After the abolition of slavery, economic challenges persisted, leading many Cape Verdeans to emigrate. Cape Verde achieved independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975, and has since established a stable democracy, earning a reputation for good governance and social progress. The country's unique blend of African and Portuguese influences is reflected in its vibrant music, language (Kriolu), and traditions, making it a distinctive part of the West African cultural landscape.
