South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a remote and sparsely populated British Overseas Territory located in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Comprised of South Georgia—a mountainous, glaciated island—and a chain of smaller volcanic islets known as the South Sandwich Islands, this territory is situated about 1,400 kilometers east of the Falkland Islands. Historically, South Georgia was first sighted by Captain James Cook in 1775, who claimed it for Great Britain and named it in honor of King George III. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the island was a hub for seal hunting and whaling, with several whaling stations established—most notably Grytviken, which now serves as the territory’s principal settlement and research station. The South Sandwich Islands were also explored and annexed by Britain in 1908, consolidating imperial claims against Argentine interests in the region. The territory’s history includes significance during the 1982 Falklands War, as Argentine forces briefly occupied parts of South Georgia before being expelled by British troops. Today, the islands are uninhabited except for temporary scientific staff, and they are renowned for their pristine biodiversity, serving as a critical habitat for seals, seabirds, and penguins amidst some of the world’s most isolated and stunning natural landscapes.
