Jordan, officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a country located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe in the heart of the Middle East. Its territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times and features prominently in the histories of ancient civilizations such as the Nabataeans, whose capital Petra remains one of the world's most stunning archaeological sites. Throughout history, Jordan has witnessed the rise and fall of great empires, including those of the Romans, Byzantines, and the Islamic Caliphates. In the 20th century, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Jordan emerged under British mandate, eventually gaining independence in 1946. Since then, Jordan has maintained relative stability in a turbulent region, playing a key diplomatic and cultural role while preserving its rich heritage and welcoming waves of refugees from neighboring conflicts.
