North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country located in East Asia on the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. Its modern history began after World War II when Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule in 1945, leading to its division along the 38th parallel into Soviet-occupied North Korea and U.S.-backed South Korea. In 1948, Kim Il-sung established a communist regime in the North, setting the stage for decades of authoritarian rule under the Kim dynasty. The Korean War (1950-1953) further entrenched the peninsula’s division, ending in an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war. Since then, North Korea has remained isolated, with a centralized command economy and a strong focus on military strength, particularly nuclear weapons development. The country’s leadership, marked by a cult of personality, has passed from Kim Il-sung to his son Kim Jong-il, and then to his grandson Kim Jong-un, under whom North Korea continues to pursue a path of self-reliance, strict control over society, and persistent tension with the international community.
