Macao holidays 2024

Country · MO

Macao, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, is a vibrant city located on the southern coast of China, bordering Guangdong province and facing the South China Sea. Historically, Macao was a crucial port for maritime trade between China and Europe, and its strategic significance led the Portuguese to establish a settlement there in the mid-16th century, making it the first and last European colony in China. For over four centuries under Portuguese administration, Macao developed a unique blend of Chinese and European cultural influences, evident in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions. In 1999, Macao was handed back to China and became a special administrative region under the "one country, two systems" principle, ensuring a high degree of autonomy and the preservation of its capitalist economy and multicultural heritage. Today, Macao is renowned globally as a major tourism and entertainment hub, especially famous for its thriving casino industry, earning it the nickname "the Las Vegas of Asia."
