Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha holidays 2028

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is a remote British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, composed of three distinct island groups. Saint Helena, the most famous, was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 and later became a key British possession. It is best known as the site of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile and death from 1815 to 1821 after his defeat at Waterloo. Ascension Island was first garrisoned by the British during the Napoleonic Wars to prevent any attempt to rescue Napoleon, and later became a vital communications and military hub, especially during World War II and the Falklands War. Tristan da Cunha, the most isolated inhabited archipelago in the world, was settled by British subjects in the early 19th century and retains a small, resilient community. Throughout their history, these islands have served as important strategic outposts for maritime navigation and military operations, and today they rely economically on fishing, limited tourism, and British government support, while maintaining rich and unique cultural traditions.
